Cup punters latch on to staying star Avilius

Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien has hot favourite Yucatan for the Cup on Tuesday, however punters are latching on to rising staying star Avilius to deliver for James Cummings.

Online betting company Sportsbet report a punting storm on the four year gelding including including a $10,000 wager at the huge price of $13.

Avilius who won The Bart Cummings at Flemington last month defeating Jaameh has now surpassed second favourite Magic Circle as the second most popular runner behind $4.50 favourite Yucatan.

Asked about the Cup market spokesman Sportsbet said: Yucatan is clearly the top pick for the Cup, but there’s been a consistent wave of support for Avilius. He’s prepared by James Cummings, whose late grandfather Bart Cummings won the Cup 12 times, so there is an element of sentiment there.

Meanwhile in other big race news £2.90 is all here for the taking on Thinkin’ Big who is all the rage for Saturday's Victoria Derby ahead of Aramayo who is being ignored in the betting at $6.50.
