What happens to my bet if a tennis player retires?

The 2019 Australian Open starts today so we've taken a gander at the big Australian Bookies to see what happens to your bet if a player retires during the match.

Generally the bookies can be put into two different groups, those that void all bets when a player retires and those that will still pay out if at least one set has been played.

It's important to know that mid-match tennis retirement rules usually only applies to the tennis match result market and not necessarily other markets.

So if you are having a bet on the 2019 Australian Open over the next two weeks, don't get stitched up, there are a few Australian Bookmakers who will pay out if a player chucks in the towel and retires.

Australian Bookmakers that do pay out on retirements

Here's an example

You put $10 on Federer to beat Nadal.

Federer takes the first set and your bet is looking good but in the second set, Nadal retires through injury.

With other bookmakers – Your bet is void.

With any of the bookies above – You are paid out a winner.

However, and this might sound too good to be true. Sportsbet play by slightly different rules. If the player you bet on retires at ANY point in the match, your wager will be refunded and if your opponent retires after the first set, then you’ll get paid as a winner. Win Win!
