Winx top choice for Secretariat Vox Populi Award

Winx has been honored with the Secretariat “Vox Populi” award also known as the "Voice of the People" award which recognises a horse whose popularity captivates fans and draw interest to the sport of racing.

WinxIt is hardly a surprise given the dominance of the champion mare who has raced seven times for seven wins in 2018 and an impressive 29 consecutive wins including an historic fourth straight victory in the prestigious Cox Plate.

Trained by Chris Waller and ridden by jockey Hugh Bowman, Australia's queen of racing overcame competition from Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Accelerate, Triple Crown winner Justify, champion US filly Monomoy Girl and dual Arc winner Enable.

The Secretariat Vox Populi Award was established in 2010 by Penny Chenery, who was the owner of Secretariat. The custom-made Vox Populi trophy will be presented to connections of Winx on January 12 at Santa Anita Park.

When announcing that Winx was the top choice of U.S. voters as well as international fans representing a record 60 countries Kate Chenery Tweedy, daughter of Penny Chenery, said: “And once again, the ‘Voice of the People’ spoke very clearly.

"The fact that both the American public and voters abroad were not limited by international borders is a wonderful testament to the growth of the award and the winner’s global appeal."

“Winx represents everything Mom envisioned when she created this award and reaffirms her notion that a beloved horse will captivate fans and draw interest to the sport no matter where they race.”

Winx who is currently in the spelling paddock joins Ben's Cat (2017), California Chrome (2016 and 2014), American Pharoah (2015), Mucho Macho Man (2013), Paynter (2012), Rapid Redux (2011), and Zenyatta (2010) on the list of previous Secretariat “Vox Populi” award winners.
